Past President - Lyle C. Shaver - Messages

Date:   September 08, 2003

Dear Members,

First, I would like to take a moment to thank everyone for making our Spring Conference in Roanoke, Virginia, a great success. As usual, Carol Edelen kept everyone focused on the mission at hand and RC Bartley did a wonderful job on the speakers’ program. A special thanks to Laura Tierney, our Editor, who had her first edition of the Chesapeake Examiner published. I hope everyone who attended the conference in Roanoke enjoyed both the educational and social aspects of the meeting.

We are rapidly approaching our Fall Conference (November 7 and 8) in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Another truly educational conference is being planned. A special invitation has been extended to the members of the Pennsylvania Division. We look forward to a good turnout from their members. Gettysburg is a place of historical significance to all of us and I hope that everyone will take a little extra time to see all that is offered.

My term as President is quickly coming to an end. I would like to thank all those individuals who make our Division such a success. An incredible amount of time and energy goes into not only the conferences, but the day to day operations of the Division. We could not succeed without all of the behind the scenes work that is taken on by these individuals. We continue to strive to make the CBD-IAI a model for other Divisions. I encourage everyone to get involved and take a part in our future success.

Sincerely yours,

Lyle C. Shaver

The CBD has over 500 members, with close to 100 certified Latent Print Examiners. We have a very strong representation in the IAI Parent Body, including several officers, board members, committee members and Distinguished Members. We are represented by some of the most knowledgeable and well-repected individuals in our field. We rely on their wisdom to guide us into the future.

The involvement of the younger members and students has rejuvenated the CBD and given it purpose and direction. The CBD is continuing its work on the development of a scholarship program to assist students. We ask these members, as well as all others, to take an active role in this organization. Your involvement, whether as a lecturer at a conference, a committee member, a contributor to the Examiner, or in any other way, is a benefit to every member. Our continued success as an organization is dependent upon every member's input.

Our publication, the Chesapeake Examiner, has evolved into something with which we are all proud to be associated. Debbie Leben has moved to the Board of Directors and has been replaced by Laura Tierney as Editor. Good luck to both!

If you have not taken the opportunity to visit the Chesapeake Bay Division- IAI website (www.cbdiai.org), you should take a look. This is a comprehensive site full of useful information. We are all thankful for the work Alex Mankevich has done as our webmaster.

Our Second Vice President, R.C. Bartley, has worked diligently to put together a comprehensive speaker's program for the Spring Conference in Roanoke, Virginia. I look forward to seeing everyone there in April and thank you for allowing me to represent you as President of the Chesapeake Bay Division of the International Association for Identification.

We have just completed our Fall 2002 conference in Ocean City, Maryland. Over 200 attendees enjoyed an extensive lecture and workshop program. Our current Board of Directors Chairperson Robert Walls and our current First Vice-President Patrick Davis did a wonderful job putting together such a successful conference program. As we have all become accustomed, Carol Edelen kept everyone focused on our objectives. The Chesapeake Bay Division of the International Association for Identification (CBD-IAI) would not be as successful as it is without her invaluable efforts on our behalf.

If you are reading this message on our website you have no doubt seen what a masterful job Alexander Mankevich has done. The CBD website provides extensive information about our Division and additionally provides information related to various forensic disciplines. Our hats are off to Alex for continuing to maintain this valuable resource.
